The original function of the forwarder was to arrange for the carriage of our customers' goods by contracting with various carriers. Our responsibilities included advice on all documentation and customs requirements in the country of destination. Our correspondent agent overseas looked after our customers' interests and kept us informed about matters that would affect movement of goods.

In modern times we still carry out those same responsibilities for our clients, and still operates either with a corresponding agent overseas or with our own company branch-offices. In a single transaction, it can happen that we may be acting as a carrier (principal) or as an agent for our customers or both.
